7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora Itinerary

Day 1 : Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate

Our 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora will start early in the morning by crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Ticka pass (about 2260 meters altitude), through traditional Berber Villages, towards the village of Ait Benhaddou.

 We will visit the magnificent Kasbah (fortress) classified as UNESCO world heritage site since 1987 and famous film production location (Gladiator, Game of Thrones). The guide will explain you the history of this magic place and will take you to the top of the hill to admire the beautiful views of the whole village. Then we will drive towards Ouarzazate, our destination. Dinner and accommodation in a charming riad.

Day 2 : Ouarzazate – Anti Atlas – Agdz – Draa Valley – Zagora (Desert)

After having breakfast, we’ll go on the 2nd day of 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora where we will leave the riad in Ouarzazate and continue towards the Kasbah of the Gypsies, and we will stop to obtain unbeatable views over the lake. We will then continue through the Anti Atlas and Tizi n’Tinififft (1,660 of altitude) towards Agdz.

 From there we will take a road that will take us to the Kasbah of Alkaid Ali in Tamnougalt. In the afternoon, we will cross the Draa Valley and its palm groves and Kasbahs until we reach Zagora. Dinner and overnight in a charming Kasbah.

Day 3 : Zagora (Desert) – Tafraout – Ramlia – Merzouga (Desert)

The 3rd day of this 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora will be consisted of a full and authentic Sahara desert experience.

After breakfast, we will leave early the kasbah in Zagora because today 280 km awaits us along the tracks where the old Paris-Dakar Rally passed: all desert, crossing rivers of sand, dry lakes and endless plains. This tour will give us the opportunity to see the real life of the nomads and how it is to live in a desert.

 We will drive parallel to the border with Algeria, and stop to eat in a shelter in the surroundings of Ramlia. We will continue along this track until we reach the impressive sand dunes of the Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Dinner and overnight in a Kasbah / charming hostel.

Day 4 : Merzouga (Desert) – Khamlia – Merzouga (Desert)

After breakfast, we will continue our tour through another of the tracks that were used in the old Paris-Dakar Rally, visiting desert nomads with whom we will have tea. We will also visit an oasis where some movies like Sahara, starring Penélope Cruz, were filmed and the town of Khamlia, where its inhabitants, originally from Mali, will offer us a small concert of Gnawa music. 

After that we will be heading back to the hostel, where the camels caravan will be waiting to take us to the heart of the desert just in time to enjoy a majestic sunset and admire the color-changing sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. You will spend the night in a camp in the middle of the desert and have a taste of Berber Life.

 You will be settled in a nomad tent and welcomed with a traditional Moroccan mint tea and Berber dinner. After dinner, your nomad hosts will invite you to enjoy a session of Berbers drumming, singing and dancing around the camp fire. the 4th day of the best 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora will be finished by a sleep under the shining stars of the Sahara Desert.

Day 5 : Merzouga (Desert) – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dades Gorges

If there is something that no one can miss is enjoying a sunrise in the desert, so this day we will get up early (you can climb on to one of the highest dunes of Erg Chebbi). You will then ride the camels back to the hostel for a quick shower and breakfast. After that, we will leave for the town of Rissani, birthplace of Morocco’s ruling royal family and the age-old capital of the Tafilalt region, famous for its traditional Souk and the dates market.

 We will then continue our tour towards the spectacular Gorges, the dramatic Todra Gorges (the Todra river bed has formed a gorge of vertical walls of enormous proportions and of great beauty, the paradise of the climbers). We will stop to explore the canyons and have lunch.

 After lunch, we will continue our journey until we reach our destination, Dades Gorges. Dinner and accommodation in a charming riad.

Day 6 : Dades Gorges – Roses Valley – Boutghrar – Ouarzazate

As usual this day of the 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora will start right after having breakfast, we will leave the riad in Dades Gorges, heading towards the High Atlas, where we will observe the way of life of the Berbers of the mountain and the difference between the nomads of the desert and those of the Atlas.

 We will see the caves where they live and have a tea with them to understand their customs and play with the children, discovering the real life of the nomads. We will then follow the road towards the Roses Valley, where its people make creams, soaps and the famous water of roses, all natural products made from the crops of the roses. 

After lunch we will continue our 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora until we reach Ouarzazate where we’ll have dinner and spend a night in a charming riad.

Day 7 : Ouarzazate – High Atlas – Marrakech

On the last day of our 7 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and Zagora, after breakfast, we will leave the riad in Ouarzazate to visit the beautiful Kasbah of Taourirt (home of the former caïd and owned by T’hami El Glaoui), where people from the Atlas, Draa and Dades Valleys have traded and socialized for centuries. We will then start our journey back to Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains and Tizi n’ Tichka pass, stopping along the way to have lunch. We will arrive in Marrakech late in the afternoon.
